Romance tropes are familiar story patterns that readers love to revisit. They help find books that match the kind of romantic experience you're craving.
Here are a few popular tropes in Clean Young Adult Romance Books.
Friends to Lovers
Two friends begin to realize their feelings may be changing into something more. The fun comes from watching their relationship evolve and wondering whether they'll risk their friendship for love. (Isn't the answer always: YES!!).
My books: Check out Trail Crossings when two training partners reconnect after the death of a friend/sister. This book makes my heart break and warm all at the same time. To me, it's my most emotional book. I love the connection between the main characters and how they help each other heal. For a lighter book, try The Dream Crush. Landon is a dream book boyfriend. He's going to lay it all out for Lizzie, his best friend, but wants the best for her when she starts to date her crush. If you want to smack Lizzie and tell her to get with Landon already...that's what I want too!
Enemies to Lovers
Two characters clash at first and discover their feelings may be more complicated than they expect. Expect witty banter, misunderstandings, and plenty of tension.
My books: The Dream Summer. This is a redemption arc for Bianca and Case. (They also appear in other Dream Prep Academy books). The class prankster who has always loved the popular girl but can't prove it to her because she thinks he's pranking her. And two enemies ending up on a private island for the summer...dream come true. I love the ways Case goes to show he cares for Bianca (I mean, he puts on a period cramp simulator for her and goes to the store to buy feminine products and always makes sure she has her favorite things...and he cuts her hair...swoon!)
Love Triangles
This is a love it or hate it trope. One character finds themselves caught between two romantic possibilities. Love triangles bring difficult choices, competing feelings, and plenty of opportunities for readers to pick a favorite.
My books: Sports romance books are the perfect place to put a love triangle with competing interests. My Love is a Triathlon series will have you picking a team (or rather a book boyfriend). Side with Paul or Dylan, as they each chase after Ash's heart in this heart pounding sports romance series. If you read the series, let me know if you think she chose the right guy. I happen to think he's perfect for her and she's perfect for him.
Fake Dating
Two characters pretend to be a couple for a particular reason, only to discover their feelings might be real! This trope is perfect for awkward situations, funny moments, and unexpected chemistry.
My books: The Dream Job. Oh, my goodness. I'm recording this right now for an audiobook on my YouTube channel (hopefully to be released at the end of 2026), and I forgot how much I love Milo and Rivers together. The scholarship girl helping the rich boy around his school and joking she's paid to date him. He keeps gummy worms in his pocket for her! They're both so in tune with the unspoken things in each other's lives. They make my heart flutter as one of my cutest couples in the Dream Prep Academy series. And spoiler...I'm currently writing another fake dating book in a secret project.
Sports Romance
When romance meets competition, characters must balance their feelings with teamwork, training, ambition, dreams, and the pressure to succeed. Sports romance can be appealing to readers who enjoy athletic characters and high-stake competitions. Plus, this trope/genre pairs well with other tropes. Sports romance can meet fake dating, love triangles, friends to lovers, and more.
My books: You guessed it...The Love is a Triathlon series. That has swimming, running, cycling, and water polo! Trail Crossings has mountain biking and Love with Training Wheels has esports (the cycling kind, not the gaming kind). The For the Love of Sports series is all sports romance. I throw sports into other books too. Milo is a soccer player. All the Dream Prep Academy students are required to participate in a sport. Emma runs cross country in the Running on Love and Donuts series.
Other Tropes
There are so many other tropes. I wrote a post on 12 Popular YA Tropes too. What is one of your favorite tropes in clean teen romance books?
